Put AdBlue in Diesel Tank: What to Do When You’ve Made a Mistake

Car batteries can go flat for several reasons, which is why we have assembled these great top tips to help prevent the most unfortunate happening.

A flat battery can be annoying and really mess up your day, especially on those dark, cold winter nights. However, a flat battery can be easily avoided by periodically maintaining it, as you would with many other car parts.

A flat battery means that no matter how good you looked after your engine, your car still will be unable to start. Cold winter weather has a different effect on batteries, reducing down the chemical processes which transpire within. In the worst-case situation, there may not be enough current left to crank your engine and therefore, unable to start your car.

A flat battery interrupting your morning drive is one of the worst ways to begin a day. So it is practical to keep your battery in the highest possible condition during the cold, dark winter months.

Dead car batteries are the number one cause of breakdown callouts during the winter here in Scotland, which is why we have partnered with Battery Hero to write the following useful tips to help keep your wheels turning this winter.

Keep Driving:

Batteries are subjected to peak strain when doing a large number of short trips, as the engine and alternator are not given sufficient chance to recharge the battery to its prior state. Try to make some more distant journeys to give the car’s battery a chance to recharge itself.

Switch off:

Modern cars are crammed with energy-sapping technology, which, if left on, will manage to drain the battery quickly. Lights and heaters are the biggest menaces for flattening a battery; however, things plugged into a USB or 12V supply will also quickly drain the battery’s charge. Check your interior lights, too – leaving them on overnight could be a high-priced mistake.

Ease the strain:

Lowering the clutch when starting the engine can help take the tension off your car. It reduces the energy needed to start and consequently takes away some of the load on the battery.

Check your battery:

You can do a visual inspection every time you raise the bonnet to look for corrosion, but it’s worth getting a professional inspection, too. If you’ve purchased a used car, check the owners manual and make sure the former owner had the correct battery installed. A new battery could be a worthwhile investment.

Check other battery-related systems:

If you’re worried, get an expert to check over the starting and charging systems. If any of these systems are malfunctioning, it could occur in the car’s battery being overcharged, undercharged and in some cases not charged at all – all of which will influence battery life.

Service your car:

An inadequately maintained vehicle can put added strain on the battery – from underinflated tyres to an overburdened engine. And if you own a garage, keep your car in it; hotter temperatures are better for batteries.

Know the warning signs:

Noises like clicks as you turn over the ignition of the vehicle, dashboard lights going dim or the engine turning over very gradually are all signs that a battery is flatter than it should be.

Don’t persist:

A battery won’t magically recapture charge; if it fails to start the engine, stop trying, as you’ll only flatten it further for no purpose. Completely flattening a battery will damage it.

Safety first:

If you’ve come to a stop in a dangerous place like next to a busy junction, try to get the car somewhere more competent before proceeding. See if some passers-by will help push, if not give battery doctor a call they will be able to assist you at the roadside.

Be ready to jump-start:

In an emergency, you may need to jump-start the vehicle. Keep a set of jump leads in the vehicle and learn how to carry out the procedure.
